Eastwick (2009), television series on ABC

This name-dropping film is loosely based on John Updike’s American novel titled The Widows of Eastwick. Set in a small-town in Rhode Island, three ordinary, but gorgeously sexy, single women discover and learn to harness their magical powers. The Devil moves in, disguised as pop art collector, Darryl Van Horne and really heats things up to his own demise.

Have no fear. The not-so-handsome Devil is not completely out of the picture. (Pun intended.)

From the onset, these fun characters oozed sensuality, but still left a lot to the imagination, which says a lot for a PG-13 movie from 1987.

Eat

Throughout the entire film there were great aphrodisiac delights for even the most timid epicurean adventurer. I recommend a lot of “hands on foods” like pistachios, bananas, whip cream, grapes and of course CHERRIES and FIGS.

If you want to keep it ol’skool, cheese whiz, triscuits, popcorn, and chips will work, too.

“Sure: quilting, macramé. What did we do last Thursday night?”
“Chinese aphrodisiac cooking.”

Basic Chinese Aphrodisiac Cooking:
Yummy Ginger/Garlic/Honey Sauce for any Stir Fry

A garlic ginger stir-fry sauce is adaptable and can be heart healthy.
Our version has simple ingredients including garlic, soy sauce, honey, ginger, sliced green onion and rice wine.

Step 1: Mix soy sauce, honey and wine* in a bowl, based on the saltiness and spice for your taste and set aside. *You can kick it up a notch with some red pepper.

Step 2: Warm a tablespoon of sesame oil in pan with equal parts garlic, green onion and ginger till aromatic (but not brown), about 45 seconds to a minute, stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Take pan from heat and add liquid mixture. Now you have the sauce for a tasty stir-fry.

Aphrodisiac Items Found in The Witches Of Eastwick

Ginger root raw, cooked or crystallized is a stimulant to the circulatory system. Perhaps a stir-fry with freshly grated ginger can stir something spicy up in the bedroom later.

The ‘heat’ in garlic is said to stir sexual desires. Make sure you and your partner share it together. Garlic has been used for centuries to cure everything from the common cold to heart ailments. This is a good time for moderation. Enjoy pasta with a lightly garlicky sauce and it will lead up to something spicy in the bedroom later.

The banana flower has a marvelous phallic shape and is partially responsible for popularity of the banana as an aphrodisiac food. An Islamic myth tells the tale that after Adam and Eve succumbed to the “Apple” they started covering their “nudity” with banana leaves rather than fig. From a more practical standpoint bananas are rich in potassium and B vitamins, necessities for sex hormone production.

An open fig is thought to emulate the female sex organs and traditionally thought of as sexual stimulant. A man breaking open a fig and eating it in front of his lover is a powerful erotic act. Serve fresh Black Mission figs in a cool bowl of water as it is done in Italy and be sure to eat with your fingers!

Drink

Cheers. The Ladies of Eastwick made it perfectly clear, you can be just as sexy and alluring drinking beer out of a can, as you can be drinking martinis out of a shoe, or champagne out of fine crystal.

A Dirty Vodka Martini

  • 3 ounces Your Favorite Vodka
  • .5 ounce Dry Vermouth
  • Green Olives (in liquid)

In a mixing container, combine vodka, dry vermouth, olive liquid (brine). Pour cocktail into a glass over ice, or in a shaker. Either drink on the rocks, or strain into a glass. Add olives.

Van Horne-y Cherry Martini

  • 2 ounces cherry vodka
  • 4 ounces Sparkling Cherry flavored water or juice
  • 2 ounces Tart Cherry Juice
  • Vanilla Sugar (to rim the glass)

Wet the rim of a martini glass with vodka. Pour vanilla sugar on a plate, and turn the wet edge of the glass with sugar to coat. Add vodka, sparkling beverage & tart cherry juice to glass. Stir gently with a small spoon and add ice if you like.

Play

The world is your playground with this extravagant, yet horrifying cinematic delight. Suggested costume ideas range from late night lingerie, to an 80’s throwback honoring the witchy women and their glamorous transformation.

And if you haven’t gotten enough of them yet, how about a cherry?

The most important thing to do is to have fun with this movie and not to take yourself too seriously.
